Abstract: Non-Maxwellian distributions are commonplace in many systems—from space plasmas and self-gravitating systems to controlled experimental settings. In this talk, I introduce the concept of superstatistics, which captures the statistical properties of such systems as a superposition of statistics. I outline the key principles of the formalism and present its applications to space plasmas, gravitational systems, and magneto-optical traps. I then turn to recent advances in understanding the relaxation of nonequilibrium systems within the superstatistical approach. Finally, I discuss how these non-Maxwellian distributions might be exploited to enhance reactivity in fusion processes.
