Abstract: Eight years after the discovery of the first gravitational-wave signal, the ground-based gravitational-wave detectors LIGO and Virgo have observed roughly 100 more mergers of black holes and neutron stars. After describing what gravitational wave can reveal, both about individual sources and their underlying populations, I will summarize some of the results obtained with the most recent dataset. I will then describe the scientific potential of next-generation gravitational-wave observatories such as Cosmic Explorer, which will detect hundreds of thousands of mergers per year, exploring the high-redshift universe and the formation and death of the first stars.
