Title: "The importance of boundaries – advancing space sciences through large-scale probing of Earth’s magnetosphere"

Abstract: Scale sizes of physics at Earth’s magnetopause boundary span from a few kilometers to many Earth radii. Although recent missions such as NASA’s MMS have unlocked many secrets of micro-scale physics at this boundary, the meso-scale and system level understanding remain outside the field-of-view of current spacecraft constellations and imagers. This talk explores the use of soft X-ray (0.1 - 2keV) emissions from charge-exchange between solar wind ions and the neutral exosphere as a tool to drastically expand our experimental field-of-view. Currently several missions are in development to study these large-scale magnetopause dynamics using novel wide field-of-view soft X-ray imagers. This talk will provide a tour of this advancing technology and its use in developing projects such as the ESA SMILE mission and the NASA LEXI telescope traveling to the lunar surface.
