Abstract: Building on the explosion of interest in electronic band topology in crystalline materials in recent years is an infusion of these ideas into properties of materials that depend intrinsically on the electronic correlations, such as magnetism,  charge ordering, and superconductivity.  In this colloquium I will describe recent progress in the highly selective excitation of lattice, spin, and charge degrees of freedom using an appropriately tuned laser.  With this route, we have entered a new era of coherent quantum control of materials, including topological phase transitions and exquisite control of magnetism and other phases of matter.  After highlighting key milestones in the field, I will finish with an eye towards future possibilities on the horizon.
