Title: "The Sensitivity of Space-based Gravitational-Wave Detectors to The Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background”
Abstract: A Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background (SGWB) is a powerful probe into events in the early universe. Space-based gravitational wave detector missions in planning such as Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and gravitational wave detector Taiji offer the best opportunity to detect an SGWB. LISA and Taiji are both scheduled to be in operation in the 2030s. A joint LISA and Taiji mission would increase the sensitivity for both the intensity and circular polarization of an SGWB. In this thesis, we numerically evaluate the Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs) and GW strain for both the intensity, circular polarization, and anisotropies of an SGWB for various different orbital configurations of LISA and Taiji. We derive new equations for SNR which include intensity as a source of noise for circular polarization and the galactic confusion noise as a source of noise for both intensity and circular polarization. These calculations allow us to find the optimal configuration for LISA and Taiji, which will improve the ability of the joint mission to detect the SGWB.
