Intended Audience(s): Public
Categories: Lectures & Seminars
Abstract: On April 10, 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration caught the
world's attention when it revealed an image of the supermassive black
hole at the center of the M87 galaxy. In this talk I will share some of
that experience, and the details of the technique involved (VLBI: Very Long
Baseline Interferometry) as well as the challenges of working with an
Earth-sized instrument operating at the highest practical radio frequencies.
The results that follow from the image can then be placed within the more
general context of black hole and active galactic nuclei (AGN) science--what
we have learned and what we have not yet learned--as well as the prospects
for more results to come.
