Mike Trimpi and Jim LaBelle, Dartmouth College
Tiltle: "50 Years of Trimpi Events: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the October,
1963, Discovery of the Trimpi Effect"
Abstract: Fifty years ago this month, a young engineer in Antarctica observed in
real-time a striking correlation between two very-low-frequency radio
phenomena. The effect baffled scientists for a decade and became the subject of
numerous experiments and papers. This seminar will present the scientific
background of the observations, the story of the discovery itself, and the
eventual explanation of the effect. This talk will be at a general level,
including a fair amount of science history, accessible to anyone with a
first-year physics background.
Events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
