ABSTRACT: Traditional estimators of the mass distribution within galaxy clusters assume that the cluster components, namely galaxies, intracluster medium, and dark matter, are in dynamical equilibrium. A decade ago, we proposed the caustic method, an additional mass estimator that does not require this assumption. The technique is only based on the celestial coordinates and redshifts of the galaxies in the cluster field of view and can extend the mass estimate to radii much larger than the cluster virial radius. I will review the major results obtained with the caustic technique and describe how measuring the distribution of mass and luminosity in the outskirts of galaxy clusters can constrain the models of the formation of cosmic structures.
