Professor Liu is a theoretical and computational plasma physicist. The current foci of his research group are the kinetic physics of magnetic reconnection, and its broader relation to plasma physics and nonlinear dynamics; Through changing the topology of magnetic field lines, magnetic reconnection is one of the most efficient energy conversion and transport processes in the laboratory, space, and astrophysical plasmas. He is involved in NASA's on-going Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) Mission (https://mms.gsfc.nasa.gov/), that measures the kinetic-scale structure of magnetic reconnection in Earth's magnetosphere.
