Title: The Via Project
Abstract: The Via Project is a forthcoming all-sky spectroscopic survey. The key scientific objectives are to: 1) constrain the nature of dark matter by measuring velocity disturbances within cold stellar streams; 2) explore the threshold of galaxy formation by carrying out a chemodynamical census of Milky Way dwarf galaxy satellites; 3) map the small and large scale structure of cold gas throughout the Milky Way; and 4) spectroscopically characterize thousands of transients from LSST. To address these goals, we will be conducting a five year survey of >2M stars with new multi-object, fiber-fed, spectrographs on the 6.5m MMT and Magellan/Clay telescopes, beginning in 2027. In this talk I will provide a broad overview of this new project.
Informal discussion with coffee, tea, and snacks to follow.
