Abstract: Controlled fusion offers the potential for an abundant clean source of energy and is an important area of research, but one that is largely limited to a small number of expensive experiments around the world.  Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) Fusion represents a unique path to nuclear fusion that avoids the challenges of magnetic confinement or those of large inertial confinement experiments by using strong electrostatic fields to accelerate ions to fusion temperatures and create a confining potential well.  In this project, we construct an IEC fusion device, and demonstrate its potential as both a unique advanced teaching experiment opportunity and research device in its own right.
