Physics and Astronomy Course Offerings, Fall 2020-Summer 2021

Course Delivery Modes

Choice:

  1. Remote with synchronous components: The course section is delivered remotely and includes some regularly scheduled synchronous components delivered in a fixed time block.
  2. Remote, entirely asychronous: The course section is delivered remotely and has no scheduled synchronous components that require a time block.
  3. Remote, with optional on-campus components: The course will be delivered remotely but requires a classroom for some optional on-campus/in-person course activities.
  4. On Campus: The course is delivered with an on-campus component
  5. Individualized Study: The course section is delivered to single students by the instructor.

Fall 2020

Astro 2/3 (Isler)
11 maps to D
Choice 1
Plan: I intend to conduct the class completely remotely with some synchronous components during the assigned time block. Lecture content and discussion sections will often be synchronous. However, in-class demos, some lectures and the A3 lab component will be held remotely, but asynchronously.

Physics 3 (Brown)
12 maps to E
Choice 1
I intend to conduct the class completely remotely and largely synchronously.  Class meetings will be held in the regular time slot, and labs at scheduled times.  Office hours will be on Zoom.  Simulation-based labs as in P4 last spring will be used for P3.  Demos will be pre-recorded this summer.

Physics 13 (Caldwell)
10 maps to C;  11 maps to D
Choice 1
Plan: Remote, with synchronous components.
Lectures will be pre-recorded. Labs will be entirely online.

Physics 15 (Millan)
10 maps to C
Choice 3 (note re classroom - not required during timeblock, lab classroom can be used).
Plan: remote with synchronous components. Will use regular time block for synchronous online components (C-hour).
Labs will be converted to online and independent projects (all remote)
May include optional discussion sections some of which could be on-campus. These will occur outside of scheduled time block. Will depend on the situation and it’s highly likely that this class will revert to Choice 1 (fully remote).
Classroom not necessary during timeblock;  use will be ad hoc using teaching lab space.

Physics 19 (Walker)
9L maps to BL
Choice 1
Plan: remote online course, with synchronous components.
Remote labs; lectures will be taped so that students can take the course asynchronously if their commitments require that.

Physics 40 (Blencowe)
2 maps to F
choice 3
Plan: Remote, with synchronous components.

Physics 43 (Thorstensen)
9L maps to BL
Choice 1
Remote, with synchronous components.  Plan is to rely on two very good textbooks, and record lectures to reinforce them.   I’ll hold synchronous on-line discussion and problem-solving sections, assign a good bit of homework, and have quite a few remote office hours for different time zones.   As with Astro 74, this will have the feeling of a reading course, but with rather more structure.

Physics 47 (Rimberg)
11 maps to D
Choice 3 (classroom for ad hoc lab only;  pending ongoing grade choice)
Plan: Lectures/problem solving will be remote, with synchronous components.  Lectures will be recorded and supplemented with remote problem solving sessions.  Laboratory will probably involve some at home labs (either components sent by mail or virtual).  Some labs may have an in-person component either concurrently or when students are next on campus.
The Dept will be requesting permission to allow a grade of “ongoing” (“ON”) for this course, allowing students the option to complete in-residence labs during a residential term within the following 3 terms.
Classroom not necessary during timeblock;  use will be ad hoc using teaching lab space.

Physics 50 (Blencowe)
10A maps to J
Choice 3
Plan: Remote, with synchronous components.

Physics 73 (Whitfield)
12 maps to E
Choice 3
Plan: Remote, with possible on-campus component. This is contingent on simplicity and student preference. Lectures to be given synchronously in the timeslot and uploaded afterwards.

ASTR 74 (Mueller):
12 maps to E
Choice 3
Plan: Remote, with synchronous components, together with in-person
component for students (e.g., international)  who are on campus. The
latter may be in-class sessions at least once a week, or weekly
one-on-one meeting sessions.

Physics 100 (Viola)
11 maps to D
Choice 1
Plan: an online course, with both a synchronous and an asynchronous component. During Spring I taught in entirely synchronous mode during the scheduled slot; since some students expressed a preference for more asynchronous meetings, I was intending to ask the class.

Physics 101 (Wright)
10A maps to J
Choice 1
Plan: remote, synchronous;  TTh time block.

Physics 256 (Rimberg)
ARR maps to ARR
Choice 1
Plan: Remote, with synchronous components.  Discussion and student presentation will take place via video conference.

Grad and undergrad research and reading courses:
Choice 5: individualized study

Grad teaching courses:
Choice 3 (“optional on campus”)

Winter 2021

Physics 3 (Blencowe)

Physics 1/2 (Gleiser)
12 maps to E
Choice 1
remote with synchronous components, a model that worked well for me this past Spring with 118 students. I will maintain the same format of classes, and will again keep an open enrolment.   Labs for Physics 1 (P2 is the no lab option) will remain online as they worked quite well for students and TAs, who put a huge amount of work into them.

Physics 4 (Lynch)
12 maps to E
Choice 1 (3)
Plan:  remote, synchronous.  Remote labs.

Physics 7.07 (Wybourne)
ARR maps to ARR
Choice

Physics 14-01/02 (LaBelle)
10 maps to C, 11 maps to D
Choice 1
Tentative Plan: Remote but run as synchronously as possible, if possible with in-class components for those on campus. If appropriate and allowed, one section could have more in-class components, the other purely remote. Labs can be remote using last spring as a model, with those students on campus perhaps performing some of the lab exercises in the building if permitted.

Astro 15 (Newton)
10A maps to J
Choice 1
Tentative Plan: Remote with asynchronous lectures and synchronous small group work conducted virtually, following Astro 15 format from Spring 2020. No in-person component; office hours will be held virtually. No lab or demos are associated with this course.

ARR maps to ARR: would like to request block E.
Choice 1
tentative plan: Online course with both synchronous and asynchronous meetings.  Pre-recorded lecture material, small-group problem solving sessions.  Second half of the course is research intensive - with both individual and small group projects.  Considering on-line experiments using one of the spectrometers in my lab as well as the IBM cloud system.

Physics 76  (Wright)
2A maps to K
Choice 3 or 4 or 5
Plan: bulk of coursework is labs using lab classroom ad hoc;   pending “ongoing” option.  Main use of assigned timeblock is extended guaranteed office hours.
Class is offered in a remote mode but on campus lab work is central;  students not in residence are given the option of an “ongoing” grade to be completed over the following 3 terms when they are in residence;  students not in residence at all will work with Prof Wright to develop a remote alternative.  All students are  most strongly encouraged to plan ahead with Prof Wright as early as the Fall term.
The Dept will be requesting permission to allow a grade of “ongoing” (“ON”) for this course, allowing students the option to complete in-residence labs during a residential term within the following 3 terms.
